In the “Kills You Slowly” video the Chainsmokers tease the second song from their upcoming LP and sing about being in love.
On the tails of “Who Do You Love” featuring 5 Seconds of Summer, the Chainsmokers released another music video from their unreleased alum World War Joy, with Andrew Taggart on vocals.
“I do things I can’t defend/ And even when you hold it in/ Hold it, even though it kills you slowly/ Explosions, hidden when we’re in the open/ Keep on smilin’ until it’s over…” croons Taggart, while Alex Pall plays the piano in the snow. It’s not that clear who the other two bandmates are.
In the song Taggart sounds like he is taking his girlfriend for granted while he sings about getting drunk before their date and being late. Then he says that he offered to call her a car but instead she walked a mile in Luis Vuitton shoes and ruined them, adding injury to insult.
“Kills you Slowly” could be a reference to chain smoking, which kills you over time. Or it could be inspired by the 70’s ballad “Killing Me Softly” originally composed by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel, and performed Lori Lieberman in 1972 — then made famous by Roberta Flack in 1973. The song is about a woman who goes to a concert and becomes infatuated with the performer.
The release date for World War Joy has yet to be announced. The Chainsmokers will however go on their World War Joy Tour with 5 Seconds of Summer and Lennon Stella. It’s going down in North America from September to December. Check out the full schedule at their website.
