“You feel like summertime/ You took this heart of mine/ You’ll be my Valentine in the summer…” sings Deni (Glover) to his childhood sweetheart Koji (Rihanna). During the serenade he breaks out his best dance moves, which you may remember from his “This Is America” music video.
The story follows Deni, a local musician, as he tries to throw a music festival in his hometown, and reignite the flame with Koji. It was filmed in Cuba, and directed by Hiro Murai. The screenplay was written by Stephen Glover, who is Donald’s brother and frequent collaborator.
So we’re on the same page, Donald Glover and Childish Gambino are the same person.
On their official Instagram profile, Amazon Prime posted behind the scenes footage from the filming of the movie. On her Instagram Rihanna stated, “The response to #GuavaIsland has been quite overwhelming. So happy you guys felt the beauty in this film! @childishgambino you are a true gem to the culture. I’m so proud of you and the work you put into making this film. I felt how close this was to you and your entire team! Thank you for trusting me with this role!
