Joji’s Video ‘Sanctuary’ Depicts Retro Futurism

In the music video for his latest single “Sanctuary” Joji draws inspiration from science fiction television series from the 1960’s.

Joji, aka George Miller, Filthy Frank and Pink Guy, has released a new song called “Sanctuary” and an official video to go with it. The music video is based on early episodes of Star Trek (1966) but with Joji playing a space man who saves the day by fighting aliens and eating cereal.

Go ahead and bark after dark/ Fallen star, I’m your one call away/ Motel halls, neon walls/ When night falls, I am your escape…” sings Joji in the opening lines.

The video is reminiscent of early episodes of Star Trek, and could be inspired by Episode 1 of the fourth Season of Black Mirror “USS Callister.” Except Joji looks really tired and his eyes are puffy like he’s been crying as he stares into his own reflection in the spoon like, “Why Gawd?”

This is an excellent example of retro-futurism, or the depiction of future events from an earlier era.

“Sanctuary” is going to be part of Joji’s upcoming second studio length album yet untitled and scheduled to be released later this year. It will have to follow songs like “Dancing in the Dark,” “I Can’t Get Over You” and “Test Drive” from Ballads 1 (2018).

On his official Instagram account Joji posted behind the scenes footage from the “Sanctuary” music video shoot. He is play fighting with someone in a space costume.
