Halsey Is a Fierce Feminist in ‘Nightmare’ Music Video

Halsey gives ’em hell for telling her to smile in the new music video for her latest single “Nightmare” featuring an all female cast.

It’s bad enough being told to smile by random strangers. But for Halsey, whose job it is to have her picture taken, it’s even more annoying. In the video for “Nightmare” she expresses her lady rage.

I keep a record of the wreckage in my life/ I gotta recognize the weapon in my mind/ They talk shit, but I love it every time/ And I realize/ I’m no sweet dream, but I’m a hell of a night…” sings Halsey. This could be a reference to the Eurythmics song “Sweet Dreams” from 1983 that DJ’s still drop today.

Of course culturally women are in an angry place right now, because they are tired of being treated unequally at work, and having their own bodies policed. So Halsey’s single is dropping at a relevant time. In the new video you can spot sci-fi actress Cara Delevingne who is also a feminist.

The track was produced by Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat and Happy Perez. It will be part of Halsey’s yet untitled third studio length album, along with “Devil” and “Chemicals” with YVNGBLUD.

On her official Instagram account Halsey, aka Ashley Nicolette Frangipane from New Jersey, posted behind the scenes footage with Delevigne. They are wearing baggy men’s suits with heels and makeup to demonstrate how to be feminine and feminist at the same time. It’s a look that Coco Chanel made popular circa the 1920’s. Flappers were also considered feminists.
