Proceeds from the Vans Save Our Planet collection go to clean up the beaches they may have trashed during surfing tournaments.
The Vans Save Our Planet collection comes in the women’s Sk8 Hi Reissue, Ultrarange Rapidweld, Slide-on and the Era. They have a nifty world map print that comes in color or black and white. And a portion of the sales go to a nonprofit that cleans up beaches in Hawaii.
The Save Our Planet x Vans Ultrarange Rapidweld ($100) has a marshmallowy sole. The Save Our Planet x Vans Era ($70) is more traditional and dainty. There is the classic Save Our Planet x Vans Sk8 Hi Reissue ($80), as well as the Save Our Planet x Vans Slide-on ($45). All of the shoes in the collect feature organic textiles and synthetic suede uppers, except the slides.
Vans initiated the Save Our Planet program in 2013 with Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii to help clean up the beach after the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii is a nonprofit organization founded in 2008. They clean up the beaches after large events and hand sort the garbage. Because whenever that many people get together on a beach there is bound to be a lot of trash afterwards including evil plastic. To learn more visit their website.
In an interview with Travel + Leisure, Kim Matsoukas, Senior Manager, Sustainability and Social Responsibility at Vans, “Making the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing more sustainable made perfect sense for us. It takes place in a small island community with amazing natural resources. As a brand that cares about people and surfing, we wanted to make sure that we were protecting the natural resources that make surfing possible and respecting the community that welcomes us here for six weeks every year.”
