Marshmello is going through a rebellious phase with his new song “Light It Up” featuring hip hop bad boys Chris Brown and Tyga.
Marshmello is getting into the world of hip hop and pop music production. The music video for “Light It Up” featuring Tyga and Chris Brown premiered today and people seem to like it.
“You a real bitch, go ‘n light it up/ It’s your birthday, go ‘n light it up/ I’m drunk and I’m throwin’ middle fingers up/ Pass me the kush, we gon’ light it up…” states Tyga in the hook.
Sure Tyga rhymes “up” four times in a row. But sometimes rappers get away with that when the music production is really sick. This is one of those times. The EDM collaboration is one of the best singles we have heard from Tyga and Brown in a while now. And none of the bad bitches in the music video are twerking or stripping, which is nice because they are more than just sex objects. Also the producer has a new hip hop drop that goes, “Marshmello made it right.”
But what do they mean by “Light It Up” exactly? Are they saying they need a light? Are they suggesting that women should smoke more? Or is it a metaphorical interpretation of the phrase similar to turnt up, and they want all the ladies in the club to get rowdy and dance a lot? Should we aim our smartphones at our drinks? It seems likely that they mean all of those things and more.
The track will be on Marshmello’s upcoming third studio length album that has yet to be named, but is being referred to as Joytime III. Other tracks from the new album include “Project Dreams” with Roddy Ricch, “Here with Me” featuring CHVRCHES, and “Sell Out” with SVDDEN DEATH.
Of course just when you though Marshmello had gone rogue, he reveals he also produced a song called “Broken and Beautiful” for Kelly Clarkson. It is on the soundtrack of Ugly Dolls, a children’s movie about puppets. The track was co-produced by Steve Mac. Watch the video here.
