Janelle Monae channels Prince in the music video for “Make Me Feel” from her upcoming album out later this spring. Here’s where she got those jeans!
Janelle Monae is a singer songriter and producer from Kansas City, Kansas. She has collaborated with Prince, Big Boi, Erykah Badu and Grimes, among others. Now she is about to release her third studio length album Dirty Computer that is a creamy blend of future and past musical styles.
In the music video for “Make Me Feel,” one of two debut singles from the upcoming LP that included “Django Jane,” Monae wears an array of outfits and pays tribute to Prince, Janet Jackson and others. We have assembled a few of those pieces, including the see through jeans.
Naked Jeans and Red Beret
The pants, which are sold out, are Robert Selman Rodeo Embroidered Jeans ($595) available exclusively at Moda Operandi. Selman also designed a pair of Astrology Naked Jeans, as they call them. But that was last year and they are also sold out. Hopefully someone will make another pair of sheer, embroidered jeans before we die. But not clear, vinyl like Topshop did.
The American Apparel Cotton Spandex Crop Tank in White ($14) has a round neck similar to the one worn in the video. The Free People Du Jour Beret in Red Flame ($28) is a bargain for them. Or just get a raspberry one from a secondhand store. The silver sock booties are the same style as these Balenciaga Sequin Knife Booties ($2,190) now available for pre-order at Saks Fifth Avenue.
Monae is wearing highly pigmented blue eye shadow and bright red lipstick that matches the beret. This is like the Tarte Claypot Waterproof Shadow Liner in Blue Moon (On sale for $15), and the Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick in Ma’Damn ($18).
Mesh Pants and Crystal Bra
You can get the chainmail and guitar look from the music video for less. Because why spend more on a chain face veil than you have to, right? Look for a pair of sheer sequin pants such as the Peace + Love Nude Embellished Sheer Pants ($255). A Forever 21 Rhinestone Fringe Body Chain Bralette ($27.93) replicates the look from the video. This is a custom made Crystal Rain Face Veil ($65) by Boutique Al Jameelah. And the ‘Nasty Gal’ Making Me Ruche Heeled Boot (On sale for $50).
The chorus girls are wearing red sock boots, a white tank and cut off, high waisted shorts.
Body Suit and Statement Earrings
In this scene Monae wears a neon bodysuit with geometric drop earrings and red statement lips. The American Apparel Cotton Spandex Deep Cut Bodysuit in Neon Heather Yellow ($26) has a super high thigh cut. The Missselfridge Blue Geometric Drop Earrings ($16) are similar to the ones she wears. For the lips, use a long lasting matte liquid lipstick in bright red such as the Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick – 714 (On sale for $9). Draw a pattern of dots or whatever you want with a white liquid eyeliner such as NYX Cosmetics White Liquid Liner ($7). Then apply a makeup setting spray such as Milani Make It Dewey Setting Spray ($9.99), to make it last as long as possible.
Star Hoop Earrings
The star earring looks like the Jennifer Fisher XL Single Star Earring ($265). It is meant to be worn on the right ear only, so if you want two then you must buy another one. The Baker Boy Cap in Black ($22) is for sale at Urban Outfitters. The Dolce Cabo Stripe Sequin Bomber (On sale for $63.60) is the same style as the one in the video. You will need a beaded strapless bustier or mini dress, such as the Akira Once More with Feeling Stud Mini Dress ($50). Don’t forget about the Secret Treasure Fishnet Tights ($15) that are on sale at Dolls Kill, and booties.
So it’s not all exactly the same stuff, but you can get pretty close to the same look as the “Make Me Feel” music video by shopping around. Use Monae’s style that she borrowed from Prince and other music icons to influence and make it your own in a new and exciting way.
Dirty Computer will be released this spring 2018. Stream and download “Make Me Feel.”
