“What You Waiting For” by Lily Allen got a remix with vocals from Popcaan that make it even more dancehall electro pop than before.
“What You Waiting For” (Remix) featuring Popcaan is the third single from No Shame (2018). The track comes with an animated GIF that shows Lily Allen and Popcaan being sad in a diner while text messages representing the lyrics scroll by. It is raining outside and there is a couple making out.
“I turned a strong man weak/ I threw him down, brought him to his knees/ I’m hoping somehow he’ll forgive me/ I think to myself/ What you waiting for?/ You’ll never be sure/ Swinging back and forth/ Just leave him alone...” sings Allen in the pre-chorus and chorus along with the reggae beat.
No Shame was influenced by a personal identity crisis following a divorce with her husband in 2015. Recording took place from 2015 to 2018. Mark Ronson played the guitar at one point. The reggae is a throwback to her debut album Alright, Still (2006) that included “Smile” and “Friend of Mine.”
Popcaan, aka Andrae Hugh Sutherland, aka the Raving King, adds dancehall cred to the remix with his authentic Jamaican English lyricism straight from the streets of Saint Thomas Parish.
Allen posted this footage of Lindsay Lohan dancing to “What You Waiting For” during the filming of Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club on MTV. It is the episode where they have a big party for Gay Pride.
Allen’s only show in the US scheduled so far this summer is at Governor’s Ball Music Festival 2019, taking place May 31 to June 2 in New York City. View the tour schedule at her official website.
